Concrete is one of the most commonly used construction materials in the world, and for good reason. It’s durable, low maintenance and resistant to wind, water and fire. Concrete’s ability to retain heat makes it a versatile and energy efficient option in many construction projects.

As concrete professionals, we have extensive knowledge and experience using this material, and work with building inspectors, architects and structural engineers to ensure work is completed, on time, on budget and on code.

Basements and Garage Floors

Concrete floors offer unlimited customization, decades of durability, and can be a statement for any basement or garage. An alternative to traditional floorings options such as carpet, wood, tile or stone, concrete offers a wide range of design options. Choose from different colours, patterns and finishes for a one-of-a-kind look.

Engineered Slabs

Engineered concrete slabs or slab-on-grade foundations are an alternative to the conventional foundation wall and basement in most homes. Engineered slabs are ideal for sheds, garages, cottages and homes below the water table where basements may not be an option. Engineered slabs are an affordable and eco-friendly choice that will not sacrifice the structural integrity of a building.

Concrete Porches and Steps

Concrete porches and steps can be prominent features in any entryway. Work with concrete specialists like Great Canadian Concrete to narrow down you decorative options and choose the right colour, pattern and finish for your space.

Underpinning

Basement or foundation underpinning is the process of lowering an existing basement below a crawl space or concrete slab in order to add ceiling height or reinforce unstable foundation. This is common in many older homes with shorter ceiling heights as clients want to open up their basement and add livable square footage to their homes.

Great Canadian Concrete will work with you to do a careful evaluation of the foundation and surrounding areas to determine the scale of the job, the building codes and concrete work as required. From design and site excavation to waterproofing and sub pump installation, our experts work to strengthen the foundation safely and efficiently.

Driveways and Walkways

Concrete stands the test of time and is one of the most popular choice of material for driveways and walkways. With a wide range of colour palettes and finishes to choose from, concrete can instantly add curb appeal to your residential landscaping. Unlike interlock driveways, there is no grass, no weed and no potholes to worry about. Concrete driveways and walkways are more durable than asphalt, and when installed properly, last more than 20 years.

Interior and Exterior Waterproofing

Proper interior and exterior waterproofing of concrete is essential for durability of both old and new concrete structures. The right prep work and effective waterproofing should keep groundwater out of the foundation while allowing moisture in the concrete to evaporate to the outside. This is especially important for sites that are below the water table or have slow draining soils. Waterproofing will maintain the integrity of the structure and prevent costly basement leaks.

Footings

Concrete footings sit between the soil and the foundation, and serve to spread the weight of the structure onto the soil. Footings provide a smooth, level surface for wall forms, foundations and block work. Whether you are looking to create a new addition for your home or brand new home, footings are a necessary step of the construction process. Great Canadian Concrete can help you build that solid base.

Block Foundations

Foundations built using concrete blocks are typically warmer and dryer due to the air space in the block and doesn’t crack like a poured concrete foundation. They are a practical option for small jobs, crawlspaces and job sites inaccessible to concrete trucks. When designed and built properly, block foundations can still carry the same weight load as other types of foundations. Effective perimeter drainage, waterproofing and sealing is necessary for moisture control.

ICF Foundations

Insulated concrete form (ICF) foundations are durable, strong and energy-efficient. If a foundation is the base that supports a building and gives it integrity, the ICF foundation is one of the strongest bases you can make. Not only is it structurally resilient, but it also provides insulation on both sides of the concrete.

Constructing ICF foundations involves stacking insulated concrete forms, which are hollow styrofoam blocks reinforced with steel rebar and filled with concrete, on top of footings. The styrofoam acts as insulation and the steel rebar increases the bearing capacity of the structure. When completed, and ICF foundation will make the basement the warmest and driest part of the house.

Curbs and Sidewalks

No matter the type of property you own, a beautiful concrete curb and sidewalk is an attractive feature to include in your outdoor landscape. Our concrete curbs and sidewalks are high quality, durable and easy to maintain, perfect for these high traffic areas. Great Canadian Concrete works with both homeowners and home builders alike either redo existing sidewalks or pour new ones.

Exposed Aggregate

Exposed aggregate concrete is created by placing concrete and then removing the outer layer of cement paste to uncover the decorative, coarse aggregate underneath. Because of it’s durability and spectacular results, exposed aggregate is used in a variety of flatwork including: sidewalks, driveways, patios and more! Customize your exposed aggregate with different stone selections and finishes.

Patterned Concrete

Patterned or stamped concrete is extremely popular for patios, pool decks, driveways and floors. The wide variety of patterns, colours and replicate stones make patterned concrete the perfect choice for home owners looking to create a high-end look that is durable, water resistance and easy to maintain. Patterned concrete is low maintenance but requires sealing every year.
